This collection of Fiske Family Papers, 1719-1906, includes the following: fragments from the diary of Samuel Fiske (1689-1770), minister of the First Church of Salem, Massachusetts, including one-line entries from 1719 to 1721; correspondence of Oliver Fiske (1762-1837), a Worcester physician, from 1791 to 1836; correspondence of John Fiske (1842-1901), noted author and historian, from 1880 to 1896; correspondence of Waldo Lincoln (1849-1933), from 1892 to 1906, concerning Fiske genealogical information; and miscellaneous undated genealogical notes. The collection also includes a "Narrative of the Conduct of the Rev. Samuel Fiske,..." This fifteen page statement, possibly by Benjamin Lynde ( - ), relates the circumstances of Fiske's call to be minister of the First Church of Salem and the dispute that broke out soon after he was settled regarding the adequacy of his ministerial salary, and the contoversy occasioned by Fiske's refusal to continue to participate with other Salem ministers in the custom of the Salem lecture.
